Location
This photo was taken at a nature preserve not far from my house near the American River in Sacramento, CA.Time
I got up just before the dawn broke to walk over to the nature preserve. I love the feeling of walking around "as the world wakes" with the birds chirping and the deer getting their breakfast and usually no other people around.Lighting
As it was a bit overcast this day, the ambient lighting was perfect and the bright, lush green of the surrounding grass really helped to make the buck stand out.Equipment
Since I was walking and literally stumbled upon this buck, there was no time for a tripod. I used an Olympus Stylus 1Inspiration
I always take my camera with me when I go walking in the nature preserve, you never know what chance encounter will happen. I was walking around a bend in the trail and ran into this buck. The first instinct I had was to take the picture of him. I took one shot and walked away to let him continue with his grazing. It was rutting season and I didn't want to get too close.Editing
This photo was very minimal on the post-processing. Really just brightening the shadows so the antlers and the tree branches were more distinct. In my camera bag
This photo was taken a while ago when I was borrowing a camera from my dad. I now always carry my Canon 60D MarkII and 2 lenses: Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 di ii and Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8 L. I also carry with my a small towel for those mornings where I need to lean down or crouch to get the shot of a bird or rabbit or deer, that way my knee or hand won't get muddy, wet, or protect from stickers/thorns.Feedback
There is something to be said to returning to the same place over and over again. I know the nature preserve, what it looks like in different seasons, what animals typically can be found in certain areas. Also, this allows me to notice details, because I am familiar with the landscape. Also, patience.
