Behind The Lens

Location

On a day out at Edinburgh Zoo. I was just wandering around taking photographs and this magnificent creature was out and about.

Time

This would have been in the afternoon.

Lighting

The day was slightly overcast but with enough warmth to make to colours stand out. There was also enough light to allow me to shoot so that the background was blurred

Equipment

I used a Pentax K30 with a 50-200mmm lens. This shot was taken near the 200 setting. I try not to open the zoom up full. It was taken handheld but using the pen as a brace. It was also shot through glass

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the majesty of this creature, I had tried a few times before but on this day everything came together.

Editing

In Photoshop I cropped the image slightly just to frame up the image. I also tweaked the saturation and slightly cooled down the image

In my camera bag

Pentax K30. 18-55mm lens, 50-200mm lens, 50mm lens, Flash, shutter release, small tripod, Variable ND filter, spare SD cards

Feedback

Pick your subject and be prepared to wait for the right moment. Animals cannot be directed (usually) so it it is all about waiting for the right shot.
