I took this shot on an Autumn morning in my kitchen, as my little dog Jake basked in the sunshine streaming through the window. As a self taught photographer I love finding different ways to use natural light.Time
From memory it was around 9am on a cold Saturday morning, I was making my morning coffee when I noticed how the window light was shining on Jake's coat and highlighting his little black nose and beautiful big brown eyes. My daughter handed me my camera quietly so as not to disturb him; he was just loving the sunshine and it was loving him back!Lighting
The angle and strength of the natural light was just perfect, serendipity really. To me it gives the photo that feeling of a pocket of warmth and light in the cold and dark, and really highlights the subject and his serious little face.Equipment
I shot this with my first DSLR a Canon EOS 550D with the 18-55 f3.5 kit lens @ f/3.5, ISO 100, Shutter 1/160, Focal length 50/1, Hand held.Inspiration
It was a spur of the moment decision. The opportunity presented itself and I acted.Editing
I did some very minimal editing in Adobe Lightroom. I increased the shadows slightly to make the effect of the window light more dramatic and increased the vibrance to bring out his coat colours. In my camera bag
I always carry my Canon 100mm Macro lens; it is pin sharp and as well as being perfect for macro is great for portraits with beautiful bokeh. But my absolute all purpose go to is my Canon 24 -105mm lens. What a workhorse! Sharp and good for every situation. I always carry extra CF cards and a lens cleaning pen too; oh an a plastic bag to cover my kit with in case it starts sprinkling rain :-).Feedback
My advice would be to always have your camera handy for that unexpected awesome capture. Keep your eyes peeled and read the available light. And always look behind you; there may be an even better shot there, than what you first saw.
