The Gatehouse entrance to Edinburgh Castle at the head of the Esplanade was built in 1888. Statues of Robert the Bruce by Thomas Clapperton and William Wallace (Braveheart) by Alexander Carrick were added in 1929, and the inscription above the gate is the Royal House of Stuart's Latin motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" (no one attacks me with impunity)
