Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the duck pond at Battle Point Park, in Bainbridge Island, WA. The park is close by and is a local favorite of mine.

Time

We had an uncommon February winter freeze and the ponds were frozen. I had seen my children off the school in the morning and had a little time to head out with my camera. I threw on my winter layers and headed out to the park anticipating some fun frost images and a pleasant quiet walk.

Lighting

The morning winter light was soft and low, almost soothing if it wasn't so bitter cold.

Equipment

This was shot handheld with my Canon 6d and Lensbaby Sweet35 lens.

Inspiration

The pond displayed beautiful geometric patterns in the ice and I found the most perfect spot hidden away in the winter brush by the edge. It felt sort of otherworldly, crouched low peering through my lens at the frozen designs with the muted winter foliage in the distance. I recall the feeling well, sort of magical.

Editing

Just a few adjustments in Lightroom, a bit of contrast and lightening up, was it!

In my camera bag

It depends how long and far I go, but on a typical day locally in nature I'll have my Canon 6d, a couple Lensbaby lenses (most often edge80 and sol45 lately), 40mm pancake lens, an extension tube or two, and a couple Omni wands (glass and plastic pieces I like to place near or in front of my lens).

Feedback

Give yourself time to get a feel for a place and seek out hidden areas. Mix up your angles and get onto your back if you have to...who cares how you look or if anyone sees!
