Hiking near Aspen Colorado in spring after a winter of heavy snowfall, we found this path where an avalanche had ripped through heavy timber - an indication that it had been many years since an avalanche had hit this area.
At the right side, you can see from a clump of roots that shallow soils in the mountains lead to shallow roots, and trees too easily knocked over.
