Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken during a MarcAdamus Photo Tours in California, this specific place in the salt lakes of Death Valley National Park by the sand tufas. It is a well known place by landscape photographers

Time

It was late in the afternoon about 6pm as we had gone to that spot for a sunset shoot.

Lighting

It was an interesting afternoon as the light was changing very rapidly so was the weather, we got sun, rain, thunderstorm clouds and a beautiful sunset glow in the clouds making the scene very dramatic.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D810 at that time paired with my 14-24mm, and I also used a 4 stop ND filter to blur the water and the foam created by the salt water. No artificial light was used in this shot.

Inspiration

I was inspired by Marc Adamus himself who was attempting a similar shot at the time getting very close to the water, no tripod was used for these shots as I hold the camera agains a rock on the ground to achieve this angle, very challenging photo.

Editing

Quite a bit of post processing went on as I had to focus stack and also stack different pictures for the water movement and also for the correct exposure for the sky.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I still use a DSLR I have my Nikon D850 my 14-24 f2.8, 24-70mmf2.8 and the 70-200mm f2.8 I also carry ND and polarizing filters as well as tripod and remote shutter release.

Feedback

Think outside the box, go low, use an ultra wide angle and browse ViewBug landscape photos for inspiration.
