The male American Goldfinch or "Wild Canary" actually completely "molts" in the Spring and becomes the bright yellow and black bird that we see during the Spring and Summer. In most areas, these birds do not migrate. However, if they were bright yellow they would be easy targets for predators. So, to blend in with their surroundings, the Goldfinch "molts" again in the Fall-Winter and becomes the cute little drab olive birds that we see at our feeders.
