Behind The Lens

Location

I was on retreat at Bon Secours Retreat Center near Baltimore, Maryland. There were many butterflies attracted to the beautiful flowers around the pond. I was able to capture these two swallowtails on opposite sides of the flower with the water sparkling in the background.

Time

This was taken during our late afternoon / early evening break.

Lighting

The afternoon sun was reflecting on the water of the pond behind these beauties and sparkle provided a beautiful background.

Equipment

This was shot with a Panasonic Lumix FH25 - just a little point and shoot. No flash. No tripod.

Inspiration

I love butterflies and was mesmerized by the sheer number that were flitting about. I took a lot of shots of butterflies on different flowers, but these two provided the perfect shot.

Editing

I really did not do much post-processing. Cropped it a little and sharpened the contrast.

In my camera bag

I always have my camera and an extra battery. Rarely use flash or a tripod.

Feedback

I think the best advice is to notice - be aware of the beauty that surrounds us. Then be prepared and have patience as you look for the perfect shot. Take lots of pictures - sometimes you don't know you have the perfect shot until you have begun the post-processing.
