Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Bermuda from a glass bottom boat on the way to see ship wrecks and sea life.

Time

The captain of the glass bottom boat was as excited for us to see the spectacular Bermuda sunset as he was about showing us the beautiful corals and unusual sea life. So this was taken between 7 pm and 7: 25 pm on September 16, 2012.

Lighting

.This photo uses the Creator's awesome lighting - nothing more

Equipment

I used a little point and shoot camera - Panasonic Lumix. No flash - I really don't like to use flash - especially for sunsets and sunrises.

Inspiration

I thought the silhouette of the trees on the island and the anchored sailboat in the foreground made a perfect frame for the setting sun and beautiful cloud formation.

Editing

I cropped the image slightly in order to get the full impact of what I was seeing.

In my camera bag

I am not a professional photographer. Photography is a contemplative practice for me and so I don't have extra lenses or other expensive equipment. I usually have my camera - now a Nikon P 600 - just a point and shoot - and an extra battery. I really have been fortunate enough to get some really wonderful pictures with my point and shoot cameras.

Feedback

Always have your camera with you and ready. It is good to have an extra charged battery so you don't miss the one perfect shot that comes up just as your battery dies. But the most important advice is to just notice your surroundings. Look for ways to frame your subject like with the trees and sailboat in this picture. Take more pictures than just one of the same scene. You may be surprised at the what you see as you review your pictures - maybe a bird flew through the scene that you didn't notice at the time.
