Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Tennessee Valley Rail Museum in Chattanooga, TN. TVRM is one of my favorite places to go, ride the trains and take photos. My grandkids all love going there to ride the train with Papaw.

Time

For normal photography, everyone typically avoids the harsh light of mid-day. With infrared, the exact opposite is true, mid-day light is the best time to get great photos.

Lighting

Bright mid-day sunlight has a great infrared component to it. In bright sun, you get vivid colors, contrast and detail.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon T6s with an 16-300mm Tamron lens. The camera has been converted to full spectrum and a 590nm filter was used for this photo.

Inspiration

One of my favorite subjects are old trains. I love going to rail museums to look at the old trains and railroad cars and equipment. TVRM has several restored engines and rail cars and they are constantly working on others so every trip I see something different.

Editing

I use Lightroom for post-processing. To process infrared images with Lightroom, you need to have a custom camera profile created using Adobe's DNG Profile Editor in order to set the white balance. Other than fixing the white balance, I straighten the horizon, adjust white and black clipping and contrast.

In my camera bag

I always carry either my Canon T6s or M50. Both have been converted to full spectrum. With the T6s, I use my Tamron 16-300mm lens. With the M50, I use an 18-150mm Canon EF-M lens. For both, I have several filters for different infrared bands, IR Chrome (emulates the old Kodak Aerochrome film) 470nm, 550nm, 590nm, and 720nm. My favorites are IR Chrome, 470nm and 590nm. I also have external hot mirrors which allow me to take 'normal' photos.

Feedback

Infrared is an awesome form of photography. All genres of photography from landscapes to portraits can be done in infrared for unique results. The colors, contrast and detail of an infrared photo are exceptional. I especially like how old buildings, tomb stones and rusty old autos look.
