Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in downtown Valley Head Alabama which is the next town down the mountain from where I live in Mentone.

Time

This was taken at 3:30 in the afternoon on December 12th, 2015.

Lighting

I think infrared looks more dramatic when the sun is bright.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon T3i with a Lifepixel super color infrared conversion. The lens was an 18-135mm, 1/50 sec f11 at ISO 200.

Inspiration

I really like the look of infrared photography. Things that would normally make a pretty boring picture can really pop with IR. When I took this one, I was walking around downtown Valley Head, which is a very small rural town looking for interesting things to shoot. Looking up the railroad tracks looked like it would look cool in IR.

Editing

I normally do not do a lot of post processing with infrared, usually straighten the horizon and maybe add a wee bit of contrast is about all.

In my camera bag

I always carry 2 camera bodies, my 'normal' camera, a Canon T6s, and my trusty IR converted T3i, both with 18-135mm lenses. I also carry a 55-250mm in case I need a slightly longer lens, a tripod and set of ND filters.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is to walk around and view the world more with your heart than with your eyes. I would highly recommend infrared photography because normal things can look exceptional in infrared. There's a lot of really cool stuff out there waiting to be photographed.
