One thing that I don't like about some photographers is that they'll use a photo of themselves holding a camera in front of their face as if they were capturing an image. It's just so over used and un-creative. All you need to do is turn the camera on yourself, become a model for an hour or 2, or however long it takes to create a self portrait of yourself. I don't have a tripod yet so it wasn't easy to capture myself the way I wanted to. Something that I'd like to start doing is capturing photos of models and it is important to me to be able to create an emotional connection between the photograph and the viewer. That's all I was trying to achieve with this self portrait, did I succeed?
