Prickly pear cactuses grow all over in the badlands and other dry harsh grassland areas of North Dakota. They do not stand tall like you would see in a desert state; they are low to the ground with large spikes, but the flowers are very beautiful. I have only seen two colors, yellow and Pinkish purple.
