This photo was taken at a botanical garden near where I live, a hidden gem just off a major thoroughfare. Once a year they celebrate water lilies with a large to-do when hundreds of lilies are in bloom. I prefer to go before or after the event when the environment is quiet and serene so that I feel more connected to the natural elements, rather than the crowd.Time
This was taken during a late afternoon stroll when the light was bright enough to light the petal of the water lily, but not direct enough to uncover the pond below.Lighting
Time of day was very important with this photo. Shots I've taken at other times of day show equally beautiful lilies plus some of the koi and stems beneath the water. The sun was such that light bounced off the surface and highlighted only the lily.Equipment
This was captured with a very basic point an shoot camera I use to preview shots, with an automatic setting - lucky!Inspiration
My job is very stressful and walking through this botanical garden helps to keep me centered. I thought bringing some of the natural beauty and serenity of this place back to my office would be particularly helpful so I began bringing my cameras to work and going to shoot at late lunches and after work.Editing
The only processing used was some basic color and sharpness enhancing. In my camera bag
Along with my trusty point and shoot camera, my bag contains an Olympus OM-D E-M10 MARK II, assorted lenses, and filters.Feedback
Since this was truly a "lucky shot", my advice is to appreciate the larger scene, but always pay attention to what might appear to be the smaller details.
