Location
The photo was taken at my dining room table with Rae sat on a chair. I wanted to get a balanced shot but wanted her to be comfortable. The light was naturalTime
Early evening just as the light was beginning to fade but enough to get the low level I wanted for the shot.Lighting
There was no harsh light coming through the window as it faces SSW so far enough away from direct sunset at any time of the year.Equipment
I used my Nikon D800 which I hadn’t long purchased for some of my studio work. Hand held no flash with a 24-70mm F2.8 Mk1 Sigma Lens Which I love and still useInspiration
I love low key portraits as they can convey mood very well leaving some of the shot to imagination or interpretationEditing
No post processing this was as it came out of the cameraIn my camera bag
I have a range of Nikon Bodies D4, D3, D800, D300s and a D2xs. I carry 2 bodies with me at all times and they vary depending on what shots I want. Lenses are my 15-35mm, 24-70mm both f2.8, my 70-200mm F2.8. I do have a 400mm prime F2.8 which i use for sports shots coupled to either a 1.7 or 2 x Nikon converter. Nikon SB900 flash and a range of Colin filters if I’m out doing landscapesFeedback
The shot is very light dependant so make sure you can balance the light and the subject. Focus is critical so concentrate on the eye and use a semi wide aperture F2.8 to F4 to ensure you control you depth of field. If you can place a dark background behind your subject to remove possible distractions within the finished shot
