I've tried this shot for server years but failed each time. The conditions have to be ideal, clear skies, enough water in the water falls and the right angle of light which can happen between February 15-28. I was in Yosemite for a company event the week of February 11th and I knew that it best time to shoot would be starting on Feb 15 so I wasn't going to shoot it this day. It had been raining since I got to Yosemite, so the chances of clear skies were going to be dismal so I had already made my mind to head home after the company event. A friend calls me wanting to know if I was shooting anywhere in town, thinking I was home, I told him I was in Yosemite. He advised to stick around and try to get a shot as next week the rain will be here. I took his advise and this is what I capturedTime
The ideal light has to be at the right angle for this phenomenon to happen, this will take place at sunset.Lighting
As indicated, clear skies is one of the key components to capture this shot.Equipment
Captured this shot with an Canon EOs 80D, 70-200mm - 2.8mm @150mm, which was on TVC-23 tripod, on BH55 ballhead, with Kirkland L-bracket.Inspiration
I had seen similar shots and I wanted to capture a version for myslef. I wanted a closer-up shot of the light as it was reflecting against the granite.Editing
When I captured the shot, I purposely underexposed by 1 stop. Which I was able to open up in post. I opened up a the shadows area, reduced a bit more on the highlights, opened up the blacks. I also optimized for chromatic aberration. Applied smart sharpening to sharpen just a bit.In my camera bag
In my camera bag I now have Canon 5D IV, 16-35 F4, 24-70mm, 70-200mm.Feedback
As I mentioned this shot came in part, persistence, keep trying to capture what you see in your head. And a bit of luck always helps.
