Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, CA overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Time

It was our anniversary weekend and my husband wanted to surprise me. So he took me for a drive. We arrived about an hour before sunset and explored the area a bit. As the sun began to set the cliffs became lined with photographers and I joined them to shoot this epic sunset.

Lighting

It’s never easy shooting into the sun. I was using a polarizer to help and tried to avoid standing in a direct line to the sun.

Equipment

Camera was a Nikon d7000. Lens was a Nikon 18-55. Tiffen polarizer.

Inspiration

The sunset was one of the most striking I’d ever seen and was inspiration enough.

Editing

This was an initially underexposed photo. I had never used a polarizer before and didn’t compensate correctly, I also had no tripod to allow for a wider shutter. Post-processing included lightening and minor color compensation.

In my camera bag

My Nikon d7000. Lenses include the 18-55, a prime 35mm, a sigma 70-300 and a sigma 50-500. I also usually carry a Joby dslr gorilla tripod.

Feedback

Practice with the lighting, adjust aperture and shutter speed as needed. Carry a tripod as often as possible. Know your equipment and how it all works together. Take as many shots as possible and don’t be scared to move around for different angles. This angle was not the original one I was at, I moved to get a wider view and include the boat as well.
