I'm a Dutch photographer and I've worked in a restaurant in south of France during two summers. Happend that my boss was a photographer as well, so when the restaurant was closed, we packed our stuff, a bottle of wine and then we went off to take pictures of the stars in the beautiful environment in the Ardeche.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Ardèche, south-east of la France. I was working there in a restaurant because I wanted to learn the French language. I was lucky enough to have a boss who loves photography as well, so after work, we went to the most beautiful places to shoot astro photography. I allready loved shooting astro, but I never go out at night all alone, so I was verry happy to have someone with me.

Time

I took this photo at 00:35 am.

Lighting

-

Equipment

I used my Fujifilm XE1 with the 18-55 f/2.8 and a tripod.

Inspiration

The Ardèche is an amazing place in France with not much light pollution. I wanted to catch the light in the most dark places.

Editing

I never do much post-processing simply because I'm not very good at it. I only do some changements in the light / contrast / coloring but in this image, I didn't really edit anything.

In my camera bag

Because of the variation in my photography, I have quit a lot of stuff in my bag, to shoot portrait, interior, landscape, documentary, street, weddings... So in my bag, you'll find two body's Fujifilm XE-2S, a 56mm f/1.2, a 35 mm f/2.0, the 18 - 55 f/2.8 and my new love the 10 - 24 mm f/4. Beside the lenses and the body's, I always carry my flash light with me.

Feedback

Check out the position of the moon, I hate shooting astro with a lot of moonlight. Find a really dark place (https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/) Before taking a picture with a shutter speed of 30 minutes, take the image with a short shuttre speed, lens wide open and the highest ISO just to check your frame. It is really frustrating taking a picture and finding out you wanted more of the sky, more landscape or more of the foreground in your photo, after 30 minutes waiting.
