This was taken right after the sunset.Lighting
I love how gentle the light is. and how it is beautifully diffused. When I looked at the final images on my computer I was surprised how balanced her skin was. (although it doesn't show in the black and white image) The greens in the field and the reds in the sky seemed to even out her skin tones.Equipment
I love my Nikon. This shoot may not have been as successful if I hadn't used my 85mm F1.8. I used a tripod anyway because the low light.Inspiration
This picture is of my little girl, Payton, her middle name is Lilly and has always been our little flower girl. I saw a woman on a beach photoshoot with a similar tulip petal layered skirt. I made Payton a similar skirt so that she would look like an upside flower. I wanted to bring my little flower girl to a meadow and have her "blend in" with her surroundings.Editing
Yes, I darkened the background contrast a bit and removed some distracting flowers. Then converted it into black and white in post.In my camera bag
I love my Nikon D800. I bring the right lens for the job and one other that I think might be artistic. I usually carry two lenses at each shoot. My main three lenses are my 85 mm 1.8, My 80-200 F2.8, and my 24-85 mm F3.5-4.5G. But that being said, I often bring my 105 macro on days I want to shake things up. I LOVE my lenses. I carry two batteries (fully charged) and extra memory cards in case I come across something unexpected. I mostly rely on natural light but have my reflector when I know I will need it.Feedback
I have loved working on depth of field lately. I have developed my own rule of thumb...it isn't 100% accurate but I love the results most of the time. I place my camera 1/3 away from the subject and 2/3 (or even more) the distance from the background. I try to place the camera at the same height of the subjects head. It seems to work well with all directions of lighting. I love the feeling of compression it gives my images. It seems to bring me into the image.
