Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken from a condo downtown Seattle frm the 23rd floor. During the spring and fall seasons, we get these amazing sun rays.

Time

The early evening as the sun sets the west.

Lighting

These sun rays are at there best in the sping of fall from 5:00pm until sunset. I typically use a 70-200mm to isolate a particular area of the seascape. In many of my images, I try and remove the viewer's sense of scale. Yes, there is a tug and a barge but what's the scale?

Equipment

Canon 5D mark ii, 70-200 f4 non-is hand held.

Inspiration

I just love the changing seascape and light rays in Puget Sound. You have minutes to grab the camera and take the shot before the entire scene changes or the clouds close up. In this image, the sun rays just lined up with direction of the tug heading to Alaska carrying trucks, heavy equipment, train cars, trailers and boats. Light the path forward.

Editing

Just the usual; brightness, contrast and sharpening.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D mark ii, 70-200mm f4, 24-105mm f4, 3 6 and 9 ND filter.

Feedback

If you're unsure about your camera settings, remember to use bracketing if your camera supports it. You'll get a better feel for camera's capabilities that way. And lastly, some one once advised me to always have a foreground element for visual interest. Otherwise, there is no story.
