This gelding was tall and lanky and not very easy on the eyes, but he was the absolute best at his job: a collegiate pickup horse. For those of you that don't know what that means, he is the horse that 'picks up' riders that have either jumped off or been bucked off of their bronc-bull and carries them to a safe place in the arena so that he can return and remove the rider's gear from the animal, and then assist the bronc or bull to the out gate. This can be done by herding the animal to the gate or by roping and leading the animal out of the arena. This job is dangerous and hard, but he lived for it. He worked the Univeristy of Tennessee at Martin College Rodeo throughout my entire undergraduate career. I watched him work seemlessly with his riders and effortlessly accomplish what was asked of him. He was truly at home in the middle of a rodeo, back foot cocked, half asleep, until he was called to action. Amazing.
