I was riding with friends in their boat as they made their way to the site where they were going to direct traffic in the Parade of Lights 2015. I love being on the water, and it was especially beautiful because of how the smooth water surface made the street lamp reflections dance. The bridge and its reflection just controlled the skyline, and I clicked off several frames as we came up to and rode underneath it.

Location
I was riding along with a friend on his sailboat as he was motoring to his assigned position to direct traffic at the Parade of Lights display.Time
It was late evening, towards the end of twilight.Lighting
The water was very smooth, just slightly rippled, which made the reflection of the streetlights on the bridge danceEquipment
My Canon EOS 1D Mk III With a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lensInspiration
I was captured by the lights reflecting on the water, and something inside told me this was a picture I needed to capture.Editing
Yes, in fact, I did quite a bit of work in post. The original image’s sky was not very compelling. So I replaced it with the sky from another image. The process of compositing was quite laborious. For instance, when I removed the original sky the streetlights went with it, so I had to recreate them. And the selection took in PhotoShop left a rough edge all around the bridge. So every surface the sky touched needed to be examined and more often than not repaired. In all I wouldn’t be surprised if I spent upwards of 80-100 hours or more on post processing to produce this image. In my camera bag
The 28-135mm telephoto-zoom is my walk-about lens, mostly. I also carry a Canon EF 35-350mm f3.5-5.6L USM lens and a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. These latter two lenses being heavier I usually have them on a sturdy tripod with a gimbal head.Feedback
I didn’t understand it at the time, but this is an uncommon perspective for a photo of this bridge. It has had almost literally a million pictures taken of it. Do what you can to find something uncommon about a familiar/popular subject. It may take awhile but keep looking and shooting. It’s in there waiting for you to unlock it.
