Behind The Lens

Location

I was one of the few lucky enough to win a permit for the “Wave” located in Arizona. The Wave is part of the coyote buttes area in Northern Arizona close to the Utah border.

Time

This photo was taken around 10am back in December 2016. The actual wave had snow on one of the sides so I took this pic with the sun to my back looking out to the coyote buttes area.

Lighting

With the sun to my back, I was able to really get the colors of the sandstone the Wave has to offer. The pictures do not do this place justice and the colors will change throughout the course of the day pending sun placement.

Equipment

This picture was actually taken with a GoPro Hero 4 at the time. The GoPro enables the fish eye appearance that flowed well with the shape of the wave.

Inspiration

The Wave has now become an iconic Southwest image for several online media postings and travel blogs. After seeing the wave in a magazine, I wanted to see it for myself. I researched the permit process and was lucky enough to win one. 3 months later I was at the wave witnessing what I had seen months before on paper.

Editing

I used a small touch up in Lightroom to remove some of the shadows from the wall.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon 80D EFS 18-135 and a Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art. I also have a hero GoPro 4 and hero 5 in case I want any water shots or hard to reach angles.

Feedback

In order to see the wave you must obtain a permit via lottery 3 months in advance. You can try the day before lottery but that can be a risk to take if only in the area a day or two. Best bet is to go in the morning in order to be at the wave in the afternoon after a small hike so hat you can have best lightening when the sun is at its highest to prevent any shadows.
