Location
This photograph was taken in the Canadian Rockies at Peyto Lake, Banff National Park, CanadaTime
It was early morning around 9 AM. I had arrived at the site early that morning in anticipation of capturing the sun’s glow on the mountain peaks above the lake as the sun was rising above the horizon.Lighting
The timing of the sun as it rose above the horizon casting a golden glow on the peaks above the lake was critical in capturing the essence of the scene. The clouds added to make for a more dramatic scene. I captured a sequence of photos during the sunrise and used this photo because of the dramatic impact the clouds presented.Equipment
I used a Canon 5DMIII and a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II lens to capture the image. The photo was captured with a shutter speed of 1/6sec at f/11and ISO 100, using an off camera shutter release. No flash was used.Inspiration
The color of the water contrasted by the mountains, the sky and the time of day brought everything together to get a unique perspective of the natural beauty of both the lake and the Canadian Rockies.Editing
All post processing was done in Lightroom. Nothing special other than normal adjustments in the Basic Panel where I reduced the highlights and shadows to enhance the clouds and bring out some of the characteristics of the mountains. I also increased the clarity and did some minor sharpening. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Canon 5D MIV, EF16-35mm lens, Sigma 24-105mm lens, Canon flash unit, rain cover, remote trigger release, extra batteries and memory cards and clothes or towels and a First Aid Kit.Feedback
The Canadian Rockies are just a wonderful place for landscape and nature photographers, with endless possibilities for capturing striking landscape scenes, from macro to wide panoramas, and the wildlife is abundant. It should be on your bucket list. The weather can change in a heart beat! I was there in August and encounter warm days, cold days, rainy days and snowy days, so come prepared for any weather situation. Because the Canadian Rockies are so vast, I would suggest planning your visit ahead of time and select where and what you may want to photograph. Do your research, reach out to others who have been there, maybe take a photography workshop, and above all have fun!!
