This photo of Cathedral Mountain in the Canadian Rockies was taken after a rainstorm with the mist & clouds rising from the valley floor below and the sun peaking through the clods casting this golden glow on the mountain. Take a close look at the trees to get a perspective of scale.

Behind The Lens

Location
Banff National Park, Canada
Time
It was in the morning. I was photographing a family of ospreys atop a bridge. The male would bring food for a newly hatched chick and then take off again to find more food. This pattern of food delivery occurred through most of the morning. Taking a break from photographing the ospreys, I looked over my shoulder and saw this dramatic scene unfolding. A storm had just passed through the mountain range and the clouds were lifting from the valley floor,. At the same time, the sun was starting to break through the clouds casting this dramatic golden glow on the mountain. If you look closely at the photo you will get a sense of scale and the immense size of the mountain. Notice the pine trees growing on the ledge to give you that sense of scale.
Lighting
With a passing storm, clouds rising from the valley floor below and the sun peaking through openings in the clouds, the sun cast a golden alpine glow on the mountain. The dramatic scene unfolded when the clouds and alpine glow collided to create the scene.
Equipment
Canon EOS MIII, Canon EF 100-400mm lens on an Induro carbon fiber tripod. Camera settings: 1/5000 sec @ f/8.0 and an ISO of 400 using a 2 second delay.
Inspiration
If I had not taken a break from photographing the ospreys I would have completely missed this opportunity. As I saw the storm pass, the clouds rising and the sun casting this magnificent glow, I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture a stunning image.
Editing
I did post-process in Lightroom and then cropped the image to zoom into the details of the mountain.
In my camera bag
Today I have a Canon R5 with adapter, Canon EF-L 100-400mm lens, Sigma 24-104 lens, Canon EF-L 16-35mm lens, extra batteries and memory cards, CP, ND and GND filters and holders, rain covers, remote trigger, and a first aid kit.
Feedback
My advice is to be aware of your surroundings and take a break from what you are focusing on to look around. You might be surprised at what is unfolding behind you!
