We sailed around Svalbard in the hope of seeing polar bears in their natural environment, and we weren't disappointed. We saw lots of bears, but this was our closest encounter, when we woke up this female from her slumber on the sea ice, and she came right over to see what had disturbed her sleep.

I was too busy watching the bear at the time, but I noticed afterwards the chef in the photo - I'm pretty sure that he was just excited to see her too, and not thinking about our menu!
