We were in Japan and heard about this festival where they plant out thousands of moss phlox, so we went along to see it. It looked stunning, with Mount Fuji in the background. I had to get down low to get the flowers in the foreground like this, but I liked the effect. what the camera doesn't capture is the sound of hundreds of very excited Japanese people oohing and giggling at the sight of Fuji-san and the phlox.

We were in Japan in May 2015, and heard about the Fuji Shibazakura, where they plant out thousands of moss phlox, so we went along to see it. It looked stunning, with Mount Fuji in the background. I had to get down low to get the flowers in the foreground like this, but I liked the effect.Time
This was taken early in the afternoon. With Fuji, even on a bright sunny day, you never know when it might end up covered in cloud, so you take your chances when you can!Lighting
I was lucky to have a beautiful sunny day that brought out the blue in the sky and the pinks of the flowers, without the sun intruding on the photo, so no special lighting was needed.Equipment
No, no fancy equipment at all, just a point and shoot Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ60. I did have a tripod with me, but I took this from very low down, so it was just hand held.Inspiration
I thought this was a beautiful image anyway, but the real enjoyment, and the best memories, come from something that the camera doesn't capture - the sound of hundreds of very excited Japanese people oohing and giggling at the sight of Fuji-san and the phlox. It was this enthusiasm that we loved, and which made me want to really focus on the flowers.Editing
Just a simple straighten and crop - I seem to be incapable of holding a camera straight, especially when I'm taking it from so low down!In my camera bag
At the time I took this, all I carried was the camera, Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ60, and a tiny tripod.Feedback
Fuji likes to hide behind clouds, so give yourself a few days in the area to have a better chance of getting a beautiful day. And for the phlox, you need to be there at the right time of the year. This was taken on 13 May.
