McCaig was a wealthy businessman. When a serious recession struck, McCaig hired local people to build a monument to his family. It was more than an ego trip. It meant jobs for the community, and food for the children. He died before it was finished, and his family called it a folly, but his community survived. Oban produces an excellent Single Malt.

Oban is such a pretty place ... I stayed there for 3 nights while on a mini tour back in '08 ... we were in a 3 storied blue stone down near the memorial, near the Castle on the point.
