My youngest son always likes to try on my things. This shot was taken on holiday in Crete, he'd taken my hat and shades, and was sitting by the pool looking rather serious (which isn't very like him). The shot became more dramatic when changed to black and white, I'm also pleased with the tightness of the crop and reflection in the sunglasses.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken by the pool on holiday on the Greek island of Crete at the Mitsis Rinela Holiday Resort and Spa.

Time

On a week's holiday, time doesn't mean too much, but this was taken at around 4pm.

Lighting

The late afternoon Mediterranean lighting didn't need any help, it really does help your photos pop!

Equipment

This was shot hand held using my Canon 600D and the 18-55mm lens it came with.

Inspiration

My son had been in the hotel swimming pool so his hair was wet and he was in a playful mood. He had taken my hat and sunglasses and was mostly messing around with them, and I'd taken a couple of shots of him just being silly. However suddenly he adopts this more thoughtful pose, and I couldn't resist taking it. By taking it from the side, I also ensured that the reflection in his sunglasses was of other bathers, and not of me!

Editing

I converted the image to black and white, but the magic of this photo is in the heavy crop, by making it square and close in I tried to bring the audience closer to the subject.

In my camera bag

Unfortunately I'm not flush enough to have the best of everything in my kit bag, but I have enough of a set up to take a variety of shots. My camera is a Canon EOS 600D, my lenses are a Sigma 150-600mm for close ups of sport and nature, a Canon 75-300mm for when I'm too tired to carry the big boy around, a Canon 10-18mm for landscapes, close ups, and architecture, and the Canon 18-55mm that came with the camera. That was used for this photo.

Feedback

Sometimes the best way to take a photo of your child, is to let them be themselves and try to take the photo without them realising. When my son was that age (around 7), to ask him to pose for me would have been greeted with a silly face. This photo is natural to him, he's both playful in my hat and sunglasses, and serious. I'm not sure I could have asked him to pose like this...
