Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a country road in New Zealand between the Wairarapa towns of Featherston and Martinborough. It's a road I travel many times, but on this day I simply had to pull over and capture the dramatic clouds and grassland - and of course the road sign telling us to always keep left.

Time

This was taken in the mid-afternoon.

Lighting

This photo was taken with all natural lighting, no flash, just the weak sunlight behind me.

Equipment

This was shot with my trusty Canon EOS 500D with a standard 50mm lens.

Inspiration

I was driving along the road and struck by the juxtaposition of the left turn sign and the tracks going directly up the hill above it. When the photo came out, the tracks were hardly visible, but it was still a great shot.

Editing

To help this photo along, I upped the contrast and the clarity a little bit, but otherwise it's pretty much raw.

In my camera bag

I always carry my macro lens, a 18-55mm lens, a lens-cleaning cloth and a spare battery. There's nothing worse than running out of battery power when you're miles from home!

Feedback

When you see something that inspires you, stop and capture it! You might never get that moment back again. And above all, shoot what you love, whether it's your favourite countryside, your favourite people or your favourite animals. Have fun and don't worry about perfection!
