Location
This photo was taken just outside Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, in the snowy winter landscape during a snowstorm.Time
It was taken around noon on the 25th of January 2017.Lighting
As a photographer, the winter in Greenland is a quite unique place regarding natural lighting. There is no such thing as a single golden hour - every day consists of several golden hours with perfect lighting from the low winter sun. In this picture I used the low sun to bring out the landscape's contours and create a dramatic look by shooting into the sun. The sun was an essential part of this picture. Without it, it would have been an all-white canvas without the silhouettes.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Nikon D810 equipped with a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC handheld. I decided to use a small aperture of f/18, allowing a slow shutter speed, in order to visualize the drifting snow which is an essential part of this photo - well aware of the sacrifice in sharpness which only adds to the feeling of extremity in the picture.Inspiration
After a rough landing in Nuuk airport and being snowbound for hours on end without the opportunity to go outside the airport, a taxi driver braved the weather and picked me up. Walking from the airport exit to the taxi was an experience in itself with only a couple of feet visibility and gusts of wind reaching 55 knots. As we drove away, the police were getting ready to close the road from Nuuk to the airport. Experiencing such extreme weather inspired me to capture this picture. Fortunately, the weather continued the next day where i took this picture on a hiking trek.Editing
Nothing special has been done in post-processing as i wanted to keep it authentic. Only the usual adjustments in Lightroom and a B/W conversion has been made to create a more dramatic look and accentuate the shadows. In my camera bag
I like to keep my packing list simple. In fact, I would be happy with my Nikon D810 and Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 alone and save the weight and space for non-photography necessities to extend the duration of trips, allowing further exploration of the surroundings. However, with my recent acquisition of the D810, a tripod is becoming a more regular part of the packing list.Feedback
To recreate a similar picture, i only have one advice: Get out there and shoot! Don't stay at home just because the weather doesn't seem promising at first.
