Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken from the 15th floor of a building in Melbourne and was only my second ever panoramic photograph. Initially, it was just a couple of snaps before I though to myself I would try and take another Panoramic. It was also a very lucky shot as I only grabbed my camera at the last minute before leaving home that day to go to a meeting. I normally carry my camera with me everywhere, but as this was an important meeting, I had only intended to take my briefcase. But of course, I couldn't help myself. I took my camera and whilst I was waiting to be called in to the meeting, I got my camera out and shot this out the window.

Time

The photo was taken just after 1pm. I really didn't get to pick the time but as it turned out, it was perfect. It was like one of those moments when everything is just meant to happen.

Lighting

Been taken when it was was perfect, more so by accident than a well planned shot. Maybe if the meeting had been half to an hour earlier, I would have found better light, but as it wasn't a planned shot, I really can not complain about the angle of the natural light at all. As I love natural lighting too, I am really happy with it.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Canon 70D and a Sigma 18-250mm lens set at 18mm. Its actually my very first two pieces of equipment so it is quite ironic that they were also there for my second ever attempt at a panoramic shot of a city which I love.

Inspiration

As I said earlier, it was a meeting that called me in to the City and I took my camera with me just in case I saw a shot that was worth taking. When I got to the 15th floor of this building and saw the view, it was hard not to want to capture the moment. What started out as a single shot turned in to this panorama which would have to be one of my favourite shots.

Editing

For this shot their was obviously some stitching. I also lifted the shadows a bit to show the windows on the main building whilst adding the slightest amount of contact. Other than that, it was mostly and shot which is how I prefer my photos.

In my camera bag

Most of the time my bag contains my Canon 70D, Tokina 11-16mm lens, Sigma 18-250mm lens, Nissin Di866 MkII speed flash, flash diffuser, batteries, polariser filters, large reflector, mics, steadicams and stabiliser (I also do video) and of course, a tripod.

Feedback

The best advice for nay shot is to just do it. For me, I find if I think too much a bout a shot, I don't achieve what I initially set out to do and if by chance I do, it's usually the first image. If I shoot randomly, I'll end up with loads of great snaps.
