In the front of the Tempelhof airport sits the head of an eagle that was once a five meter statue perched on a globe above the main terminal building. It was removed from the building to make way for radar equipment for the US Army in 1962.
The tempelhof airport had an important part after WWII, in which it was the airport where hundreds of aircraft landed each day to supply the West Berlin citizens in an operation called "Operation Vittle" or better known as "The Berlin Airlift" from June 1948 to May 1949
