"Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."
-Ronald Dahl
This was a special personal set that I created with Lady Duvessa a while back, this was my interpretation of a version of a Holiday Spirit. I added in some crazy elements, but thanks to imagination, we brought this piece to life.
Featuring works by @redridinghoodknits (instagram), idolatre clothing co., Discerpo Necto Decrepitus, EpicCosplay Wigs, Timbre Wölf & Seraphim Sin.
This was literally shot in a corner of my apartment, and the background set was designed by myself while waiting for Lady Duvessa to prepare. The nose piece she's wearing, she created the day of coming over and hanging out. She's fantastic.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the corner of the living room in my small apartment. This was based off a look I had styled a couple of weeks earlier, and had posted online to share with some friends, and one of my best friends asked me if she could model the look for me, as it was something different for her and she had wanted to try to portray it.

Time

It was taken probably around 8pm or 9pm, it was the last day of November, and my friend in the photo (Maleah) had come over to do some crafting together, we sat in my living room on the floor talking about everything that came to mind, she had been working on the nose chain piece that she's wearing in this, and was working on it with one of my wig mannequin heads, it was a really relaxing day, this was the second shoot of two looks that we did together that were opposite of the other. So this was taken around 8-9pm on November 31st, 2016

Lighting

All of the lighting in this is from the set of lights she's holding in her hands, and the string lights that are apart of the set behind her. I don't use a lot of studio lighting, and my lights had been fritzing out on me anyway earlier that evening, so we decided to keep it low-key on the lighting. I set up some wicker string lights against fabric that was thumb-tacked to the wall and it was giving off some really unique lighting (they're outdoor summer lights that my boyfriend found at Home Depot), and the lighting that she's holding is a set of battery powered lightings that we had twisted and strung around her arm, and she had some in the bustle, all the way, twisted and winding to her other hand.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon EOS 6D, and I'm pretty sure it was with my 50mm f/1.8 II. I don't have or use a lot of gear when I take a photo. Don't have what I can't afford.

Inspiration

This was inspired by my idea of what the "Holiday Spirit" would look like in a magical and fey sort of way, it was a really random idea, and I'm thankful that my best friend indulged my weird idea. I was trying to plan out 'holiday' themed looks with christmas coming up, and this was just one of the random ideas that came to life thankfully. I had just gotten the wig we used as a gift for the holidays and wanted to use it for a themed shoot.

Editing

With the editing, I lightened the photo, I retouched some really simple things out to make the skin look smooth, and I used the dodge and burn to make her face pop more, the jewelry (her nose ring) to pop. I know I used some curve and color toning layers and then masked them accordingly to make her stand out against the background.

In my camera bag

My bag consists (usually) of my Canon EOS 6D, my other half got me a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM {Medium Telephoto Lens} it's made some of my shots appear almost movie like straight from camera, it's a good lens! I've had to take my 50mm out for now, as it's starting to die on me, the images it captures are becoming far too blurry to recover the textures in photoshop as well as it started to glitch out.

Feedback

• Come up with something wacky. The more wacky, the better. • Don't be afraid to use limited space. There was a couch and a table no more than two feet away from my model in this. • Use whatever lighting you have available, for set dressing, use mirrors, props. • Don't be afraid that something isn't as it should be, I used a bustle skirt for her second pauldron in this.
