Location
In Central Oregon, there is a small state park called Fort Rock SP. It's in a remote area with strange geology and ancient human archaeology. This shot was taken in the late afternoon as clouds began to roll in.Time
During the mid afternoon I had taken the time to circumnavigate Fort Rock to explore shooting locales. As the sun was setting I was standing in a spot where I could capture the light on the flanks of the wall of Fort Rock as well as the light on the sage in the fore and middle grounds.Lighting
The light on the incoming clouds added a glow to the scene and helps draw the eye to a vanishing point well to the left of the image.Equipment
Sony Ar7II the a 24-105mm lensInspiration
Fort rock is a strange and unique geological feature in Oregon. 30,000 yer old sandals were excavated in a cave in the small rocky outcrop to the left of Fort Rock in the image. A fascinating area that was once a lake and now an arid plain.Editing
Very simple and straightforward post processing. Small amounts of dehazing, contrast, texture, vibrance, and saturation. In my camera bag
I pack a Sony Ar7II body with a 24-105 Sony zoom, a 90mm macro, and a 70-200mm zoom with a 2x tele extender.Feedback
Wait for the light. Be patient while scouting your shot angles. Use midday when the light may be harsh to explore locations, then wait for the light that pleases you. Try multiple shots from similar spots to see what might work. An HDR or two will give you some flexibility in post processing.
