Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a bird sanctuary on the coast of Vancouver island, just south of the town of Campbell river. The spot was a short drive from my home on the ole highway and I hit this same spot everyday for almost 2 weeks till there was a nice sunset to shoot there.

Time

It was mid summer when I took this photo so the time must have been late in the evening, as the days were at their longest. These were the closing moments before the sunset behind the distant mountains.

Lighting

The lighting was optimal for a sunset shoot, the brightness of shooting directly at the sun was diffused rough through the distant clouds creating more even levels and colours then a bright sun that would have. This made the image softer and closer to what the eye actually sees. It was pure luck that it happened this way, there would have been no way to plan that distant cloud position.

Equipment

I was using my D7000 with Nikkor 12-24 Wide angle lens for this shot, it was supported on my trusty Manfrotto pro tripod. I opted for the steel version that is a little heavy to carry out to these spots, but has the strength and visibility for every situation I have come up to.

Inspiration

It was a few months after I had moved out to the island. Living on the coast on the far outskirts of the community, I was forced to travel the old highway to the small food store on the neighbouring Oyster Bay Community. This spot I could only ever see on my way home, on my way out there it was covered by trees and I never thought of it. The times I saw it on my way back it was always too late to make the turn. Till I was hankering for a sunset shot, and I pulled out the map and compass looking for the best place to see the sun get to it's lowest point in the distance over rate water. Low and behold what I found was the spot I had always wanted to get to. I finally did!

Editing

The post processing of the image was really light. I had to adjust the white balance and levels just a tad to get them just as close to natural as I could get.

In my camera bag

I always had my big 3 favourite lenses, sometimes I can bring myself to leave one a home so the bag can be just a little lighter, but that is always the time that I want that one I left. I always keep my nice tight 12-24 Nikkor Wide Angle. Always need a telephoto to get up close and personal with what just out of reach, for this I have a Nikkor 70-300, and finally for all of the rest of the range my 24-70 f.2.4. I also really like my 50mm 1.2 but I don't always keep it in the bag. I also keep a Job gorilla for random tripod captures when I didn't have the strength to lug my good one around. Other then that I keep an array of filters, cleaning tools, memory cards, extra batteries, and of course let us not forget lights and a remote for my favourite night shoots.

Feedback

To capture something like this you really have to do your research first. Find out where the sun is going to be and where you have to be to shoot it. After that it's just a matter of watching the weather and getting out there and trying. I must have tried this shot 10 times before the conditions became right. I have tried anymore times then that for other shots. I recently came across a tool that would have made it much easier for me, but it wasn't around then. You have to check out the iOS app photo pills. For location of the sun, and moon, and even the milky way it will show you where and where they will be in the place you want to capture them.
