Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Danaus Ecological Reserve in Costa Rica, at the base of the Arenal volcano.

Time

It was taken during late afternoon after a some heavy showers. A typical Costa Rican downpour.

Lighting

It was difficult to capture this shot for several reasons. First of all, it is a small jungle environment in which it is typically very dark, even during the day. Our guide found the treefrog ubt animals rarely pose like you want them too so this was one of very few shots I could take. I had no extra lighting or tripod available at the time, so very testing circumstances.

Equipment

It was shot on a Canon 7D mk II with a 100-400mm lens.

Inspiration

This frog was one of the target species I had on my list when I came to Costa Rica. The circumstances were far from ideal but I'm very happy to have been able to witness such a beautiful animal and have the souvenir to brag with!

Editing

I use lightroom for all my post-processing. In this case I had to improve the overall lighting and remove some noise from the shot. I always up the contrast and try to make the colours pop a little bit more.

In my camera bag

The Canon 7D mk II and 100-400mm mk II lens are my trusted workhorses in my bag. I usually also pack the Canon 70-200 f2.8 and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens. Only in ideal conditions, I use the 1.4x extender from Canon. With the BlackRapid camera strap attached, all of this is very easy to carry on longer walks.

Feedback

If you ever find yourself in the lucky position to travel to Costa Rica, be prepared and take equipment with you that works well in low-light conditions, you are going to need in there. Make sure you know your gear inside out and use a tripod if possible. Pack light! Maybe my best tip for you... seek the company of a good guide. These guys know the jungle like the back of their hand. They hear, recognize and find all the birdcalls and know where to look and what to find.
