Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken walking through the streets of Chinatown in Seattle. I am a big fan of street photography and what is better to do in a City like Seattle. There was so much variety in the city.

Time

The image was taken at around 1pm. We had headed out to Chinatown on foot at around 11am. Once we walked through the beautiful dragon gates to Chinatown, we felt like we were experiencing the uniqueness of Seattle's Chinatown, meandering through the city streets, visiting places we had never been to before. It is always exciting for me to explore the heart of the city when we travel.

Lighting

The day was overcast, and I really love an edgy look in street photography so I post edited in black and white once I got home. I wanted the faded look to highlight the distance of the street and the gritty appearance of the side street.

Equipment

This image was shot with a canon 6D, and my 28 – 135 mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. I bought this lens specifically for the trip to Seattle. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I am a big fan of street photography. I love looking for something different and side streets often gives me the opportunity to find something different. External staircases are another favorite of mine. In this case I love the behind the building look, that wasn’t perfect, but it shows a different side of life.

Editing

I am a hobby photographer. I shoot all my images in manual and in raw and then post process, first in color and then in black and white. I have Nik presets which allow me to get the really textured looking images.

In my camera bag

When I pack my backpack for traveling, I typically pack my Canon 17-40mm 1:4L as I love the really wide angle, the 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM, and my telephoto lens Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens. The 28-135mm lens was perfect for the city and at the time of traveling I did not have a lens that met that requirement. Added to that I will carry a number of cards, a spare battery and the charger, additional lens covers, a rain cover for my camera, and a disposable rain cover for myself. I will also have my cellphone charger, a back up charger, my Ipad and charger. On occasions I may take one of two of my Lensbaby optics. It all depends on if I am flying or driving. That’s to say, all of this makes for a fun transition through TSA. In this trip we not only visited the city, but headed out to Bainbridge Island along with the Orca Islands. Both the wide angle lens and the telephoto lens were perfect for the Islands.

Feedback

Travel photography and street photography is a lot of fun. For me, pre-planning is important. I will study the area I am traveling to. I like to have locations and addresses prepared before I go there. That does not mean I cannot be spontaneous, but for me there is nothing worse than arriving in a city and not knowing what you want to visit. Make sure that all electronics, camera equipment, and wallet are all in one place. TSA is never my fun moment. Make sure you have comfortable shoes, if you are like us, you are going to do a lot of walking. Embrace the different aspects of life, be willing to feel a little bit out of your comfort zone. Remember when given the chance, take time to chat to the local folk, they tell the best stories. Don’t just look ahead, look up and down, look around. Don't panic when you loose your traveling companions, they are normally somewhere up ahead. Most of all enjoy, there is a beautiful world out there just waiting to be explored and experienced.
