Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph is taken in Seattle at the Columbia Center Building. The building is around 76 stories high. On the top floor there is a pay observatory where you can get a rooftop view of Seattle. On the 52nd floor there is a Starbucks where you can get a coffee and a good enough rooftop view. Good reason to go for coffee. In fact, if Seattle is on your bucket list, do it. It is a photographers paradise and I hope I get back to the beautiful city again one day. Added to that we visited the Orca Islands and the German town of Leavensworth.

Time

The photo was taken at 4:08pm, after we had exited the building.

Lighting

Seattle was pretty cloudy most days we were there. It was the month of March. The weather fluctuated from warm to chilly and we had seen some rain. At this point we were at our final destination for the day and the light was not great. This image was taken in manual, no flash @ 1/4000 sec; f/6.3; ISO 2000.

Equipment

I used a hand held Canon 6D camera, and a EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS US (which I had bought at the last minute for the Seattle trip).

Inspiration

52 stories is as high as I have ever gone up. Heading up excessive heights is not one of my favorite things to do. The building is amazing and we had to switch elevators to get to the 52nd floor. I felt like I had earned that coffee and it was good to look out the windows and see the view. I am not sure that I would have had the guts to go to the 76th floor. Once back down on solid ground I took a number of images looking up, just for my own reminder that I had actually gone up that high.

Editing

I shoot all my images in raw and then post process using the Photoshop and in this image the Nik Collection - Silver Effects Pro 2. For some reason, for me, street photography always looks better in black and white.

In my camera bag

On any given time I could have a number of items. For the Seattle trip I had the Canon 6 D, the EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS US lens, my EF 70-300 1:4-5.6 USM lens, and my Lensbaby Composer Pro Lens and Sweet 35 optic. I had a spare battery, battery charger, a number of Scan disc cards (64 being my biggest), a rain cover for my camera, and a rain poncho for me. I also have some additional lens covers, and a couple of lens cloths. I did take a Yongnuo flash but never used it. Finally there was a tripod attached to my bag, which I really did not use very much. To be honest my camera bag weighed more than my hand luggage. On other days you may find my macro lens EF 100mm 1:2:8 L IS USM, as well as another Lensbaby composer with any one of these optics, double glass, single glass, plastic, pinhole, twist or the soft focus. All depends on what I am planning to do that day.

Feedback

Very often we tend to look ahead of us to what we see. When you are in a city look up. The buildings create a very interesting effect. All 3 of the images I took of this building appealed to me. When you are heading to a city, dress comfortably, wear comfortable shoes, and walk the city. Look down alleyways, look at staircases, look up at the buildings and the sky line. Go up high and look down. There is so much to see besides people watching and obvious tourist sites. This particular image was taken from the base of the building with the deliberate intention of capturing the height of the building. The clouds added a more dramatic effect to the image,
