Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken by the Torpedo Wharf near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Time

This photo was taken around sunset. I had gone out that day to test out some new filters I had gotten.

Lighting

I really liked how the light was hitting the moss on the rocks. And the use of an ND filter helped create the mood by smoothing out the water with a longer exposure.

Equipment

Canon 6D, EF17-40mm f4 @21mm f5. Benro tripod 30 second exposure with a 6stop ND filter

Inspiration

I was out testing a new filter and liked how the light was hitting the rocks, plus pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge are always nice.

Editing

I shoot in RAW, so I used Lightroom to process the image mostly to bring out some of the shadows and add a little vibrance to enhance the green on the rocks and a bit of contrast for the wet rock look.

In my camera bag

I usually carry 2-3 lenses. 16-35mm, 24-70 and 70-200. Sometimes I leave the 24-70 at home to save on the weight and might sub the 70-200 for a 100macro depending on the destination. Quick release, my filter pouch that has some ND filters and polarizer, plus always have extra batteries and memory cards. Never leave home without those!

Feedback

I’m self taught. So play around, figure out what you like to shoot and look at what others might be doing. Not to copy but to understand where the light is, what they are trying to achieve with the composition and compare to your own shots. Figure out what you are trying to have the outcome be. A mood photo, a story, warm summer nights. Play around with angles as well as different focal lengths. This photo was taken with a wide angle. But I also enjoy using telephoto lens to bring the background closer to the foreground.
