Behind The Lens

Location

In the Alaska Range in Alaskan backcountry, east of Denali. I was in the midst of a 30 day backpacking trip with NOLS.

Time

This shot was taken back in 2002 and memories fade, but I believe this was taken in the afternoon.

Lighting

The shot looks cloudy, which is likely. This trip was during June and July, and those months can be pretty rainy in Alaska. We had many, many wet and mosquito infested days in the backcountry. As a consequence, the light was usually soft, though we did have a few bright days in which the lighting was bright and contrasty. Not in this case, though.

Equipment

An old Motorola point and shoot camera that I packed due to it's light weight and compact nature. No flash or tripod.

Inspiration

I found this bus to be visually interesting as it was a rare bit of humanity interspersed into the wilds of Alaska. There are other buses like it, left and stocked by hunters in the event of emergency, and it was interesting to come across one.

Editing

No. This shot was taken using actual film and I had no darkroom access, therefore there was no post processing.

In my camera bag

I normally shoot either with my phone (Samsung Note 4) or with my old Canon XT DSLR. With the cannon, I usually just shoot with a normal 50mm lens. Gear is expensive, and I can't afford anything else right now.

Feedback

This shot is all about being in the right place at the right time. I did not do anything technically difficult to capture it.
