Behind The Lens

Location

Fox Haven Farm in Colerain, OH in the mid to late 90's. I took riding lessons here throughout most of high school. The horse is a Morab gelding named Simon, one of the horses I rode most often in lessons.

Time

It's been awhile, but this photo was likely taken in late afternoon, which is when I would get to the barn for lessons.

Lighting

Nothing particularly special that I can remember. Ohio is humid and often overcast, which can lead to soft, but muted lighting. However, it's been too long for me to recall with certainty the lighting situation here.

Equipment

I used an old film SLR, likely my Canon AE-1. I had darkroom access in high school, and I processed the film and print myself.

Inspiration

The natural beauty inherent in the equine form. Also, I was fond of this particular beast.

Editing

This was shot on film and I processed the image myself in a darkroom. Any modifications would have been made in the darkroom, but I didn't do anything of the sort with this particular print. I projected light through my negative onto photographic paper and processed it. Post wasn't so much of a thing then.

In my camera bag

Honestly? I rarely have a bag nowadays. My DSLR needs some work done, so I'm shooting with my Samsung Note 4 more than with an actual camera. When I can either afford to either fix the minor issues of my Canon XT or get a new setup, I'll have a camera bag again.

Feedback

It's a pretty straightforward image that I think could be easily replicated with digital photography. Just be around a pretty dappled grey horse in some soft lighting and set your camera to black and white.
