Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the Toronto Lakeshore of Lake Ontario, Canada.

Time

This happens to be a morning shot waiting for the sunrise to break over the reflection of water and ice. Somehow with the contrast of temperature it also caused the lake water to condense against the cloud line horizon. Might I add this happens to be -25 Celsius which taking this shot difficult with cold fingers and risk of losing battery power in your camera.

Lighting

I was walking along the Lakeshore boardwalk trying to find a good foreground subject to make a silhouette to be framed. Again with the wind chill I wasn't walking I was running to keep warm as I waited to find the right foreground to use with my sunrise.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D90 camera with a 200mm lens no tripod, so its was a very quick shot.

Inspiration

I have been experimenting with silhouette shots but never this spontaneous during the cold winds. Ive seen silhouette shots of Hawaii landscapes and locals. So I thought I would give it a try in Canadian winter.

Editing

post processing is finding the best shot out of many of stills and composing it in frame.

In my camera bag

I have my D90 with my prime lens and secondary lens. I would also have my iPhone for my wide shots. I have a Insta360 for my 360 shots and behind the scenes shots. I also have a DJI Osmo for my stabilized video footage. Whenever possible I also try to do some drone shots with my DJI Mavic.

Feedback

50% planning 50% spontaneous there are shots you can compose and plan but there are others that are candid that it had to be in the spur of the moment. Pick a style of a shot take 3 different angles and possibly on 3 different occasions, also doesn't hurt to have 3 different zoom angles too. You never know out of those will be your "banger" shot worthy to share for others to enjoy.
