My Wife and I love to go camping and walk the trails. We were camping in north Louisiana, USA and one morning I explored around the campsite and came across this fallen tree with this all over it. This image is of the growth on the underside of the tree.Time
I took this image on my way back to the campsite around 11:30 AM. It was a cloudy day. It is possible to capture good images any time of the day in certain situations.Lighting
With the defused lighting of a cloudy day and the fact that it was in the shade helped the image not to have so much contrast.Equipment
When walking in the woods, I like to have my Canon 5D Mark IV on a monopod to help stabilize on long exposers and it is not as cumbersome as a tripod. I had the Canon 24-105 lens on at 105. Exposure was 1/125th at F4.5 using ISO 1000. The cameras of today do such a great job of handling noise at high ISOs.Inspiration
The texture was the 1st thing I noticed. The layers reminded me of a colony of many. The stripes reminded me of the rings that a tree has and I loved how each one was different adding character. The greens and browns trimmed with white just pulled everything together.Editing
I brought up the exposure slightly on the entire image, bumped up the contrast, shadows and highlights. I added a slight vignette and increased the saturation just a smidge to bring the image closer to what I actually saw. You have to be careful with saturation, it can be overpowering and make the image look un-natural.In my camera bag
I think that packing for each outing is the hardest thing to do. I have a wide range of equipment to chose from being a I am I I am a retired wedding, sport and family photographer. I always tend to bring too much stuff and weigh me down like a pack mule. If I am walking a trail for nature photography, I typically have my Canon 5D, a wide angel lens (17-40), mid range (24-105) and If I anticipate seeing birds or other wildlife I may have my Tamron 150-600 mounted with a monopod. I have a small reflector that I use on a few occasions. If I am doing street photography, just my camera and 42-105 and a flash is in my bag. I always have a plastic bag handy for the occasional shower.Feedback
Great images can be captured at any time of the day at any location. When you see something that sparks an interest, try to identify what it is and think about how you can capture it to share with others. The world is full of interesting things created by nature and man.
