My wife and I took a trip to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, US to catch the fall colors. This was on a trail going to a waterfall. I did not notice the tree on the way going but on the way back the tree was backlit and screaming for attention.Time
That morning we did a few short trails in the Smokies. It was a dry summer so the fall colors just just wasn't happening so we started looking for waterfalls and streams to photo. It was on our way back to the car around 2:00 PM that we walked upon this location.Lighting
The sun was in the upper right backlighting the tree and throwing shade on the trail really giving good contrast and with most of the leaves on the back side of the tree it appeared as though the tree was doing a dance.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D IV with a 24-105. On that hike I did no bring my monopod so it was hand held with a shutter of 1/200 and F10. Typically shoot at a lower F stop but I wanted greater depth.Inspiration
I was constantly trying to capture an image that represent a path or trial. The trail turning out of the image just seemed to have the leading lines I was looking for.Editing
I did light processing. I bumped up the saturation some but not too much. If you are not carful you can over do with saturation and it won't look natural. I then added a slight vignette to emphasize the tree.In my camera bag
On any given photo trip I typically bring Canon 5D IV, 17-40, 24-105 and 70-200 lens a polarizing filter and monopod.Feedback
Although the best time to photograph outdoors is in the golden hours there is always an image to be made any time of the day if you look for it.
