The cowboy has left the saddle of his horse, which is in the foreground, and grabbed the horns of the steer running alongside. At this point the steer and the horse are both completely off of the ground. The only thing touching the ground is the cowboy’s heels dug into the arena floor as he drags the running, 300 pound steer to a stop.
Steer Wrestling is one of my favorite rodeo events to photograph because there is so much going on at the same time. The arena is huge at Cheyenne and the steer has a 30 foot head start. The cowboy’s horse races to catch up with the steer, then matches the speed of the animal as the cowboy leans out over the steer and grabs the horns. When the cowboy leaves the saddle, his horse is trained to run at full speed to the end of the arena and out of the way. The cowboy hits the ground feet first and, using the steer’s horns, turns his head and lays him on the arena floor in a cloud of dirt and dust. You can tell by the expression on the cowboy that it is not as easy as that last sentence made it sound.

Simply amazing. I can almost hear the buzzer and smell the dirt. Award winning for certain.

Thank you very much for the kind words. I'll take all the luck that I can get. The setup for this shot was to use center point focusing on the rider and use back-button focus so the camera never had to re-aquire focus. The luck part was that the rider's horse did not run to the end of the arena as fast as it was supposed to so it stayed in my frame. When luck complements your plan, I'll take it and say 'thank you'.

Really nice. I haven't seen a photo like this that captures the gritty action so perfectly. Great shot.
