Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in one of the suburban streets of Sydney in November 2016. We were on our way home from a day at the beach. On the way we stopped at this French Fair which was probably more like a French Street Food Festival. Stalls full of French food and wine, French music and art and the atmosphere was just lovely.

Time

It was around 6pm that day. The sun at this time of the year sets around 5pm so it was very much of a twilight hour at the time I shot this. Also this was shot in an alley so it was getting quite dark.

Lighting

As I said it was getting quite dark, my subjects were moving, constantly moving so I needed to make sure my Shutter speed is high. It was shot in a alley way and although there was a twilight, there also was artificial lighting to help with the atmosphere. So the lighting conditions changed at every angle. My daughter was mesmerised by this pierrot who was entertaining her pretty much the whole alley way (approx 200m), or should I say she was following him and poking him from behind and every time she did he'd turn around looking who is it poking him and realising 'Aww, it's you!' She was 4 years old at the time and found it hilariously entertaining. Seriously it was beautiful to watch.

Equipment

I shot this image with my Canon 7D MII and a Canon EF 50mm f1.4 lens, no tripod, no flash. The camera was hand held and because of the moving subjects and changing light conditions (movement of my subjects as well as other people moving around them I opted for an ISO 2000. This gave me fabulous SS of 1/2500sec at f1.4 resulting in a quite a sharp image.

Inspiration

My daughter had so much fun following and interacting with this mime that I needed at least one great shot to remember this event. I was lucky to end up with few fabulous shots that I will treasure forever. Believe it or not but seeing this photo I can hear her giggles, I can smell the air, I can hear the french song in the background... This frozen memory becomes live every time I look at this photo. And that is exactly what inspired me then and always inspires me now. Those true candid moments frozen in time where you can just go back in time by just looking at them.

Editing

My post-processing was done in LR and looking at it now it was very simple. I cracked up my shadows and reduced the highlights, added a bit of contrast, adding a bit of whites and blacks as well as using a brush I decreased the exposure on the background. I'd most likely would do a different post processing today, but, hey it worked and I am happy with the result :)

In my camera bag

I now have Canon 5D MIII and I always cary my Lensbaby Edge 80 with composer Pro. I am in love with Lensbaby lenses and definitely planning to add more to my collection in the future. Depending on what and where I am shooting I decide between my other lenses Canon EF 135mm f1.2 (my favourite - very sharp, beautiful lens), Canon EF 50mm f1.4 or Sigma Art 35mm f1.4. If I am outdoor in a big open space and want to stay kinda invisible the 135mm lens is always my choice. If however I am indoors or more crowded space I either go for the 35mm or 50mm - depending on my mood and also location consideration as well as what time of images I have in mind.

Feedback

Don't be afraid of a higher ISO, don't be afraid of noise. Rather opt for a higher shutter speed then for a lower ISO if you find yourself with a limited lighting conditions and fast moving subjects/objects. I could have gone away with the lower ISO and a lower shutter speed, but this moment happened so quickly that I just opted for an ISO 2000 just to be safe.
