Most North American hummingbirds winter someplace warm like Baja California or Cabo. Not this little guy. The Anna's hummingbirds stay in Oregon through the winter. Thanks to global warming and plentiful human food sources, these hummers have adapted over the last 50 years or so to stop migrating in the winter, like the other sensible hummingbirds do. I've named this one Firefoot, because he showed up in December as soon as I put my Christmas lights up, and has stayed ever since. He is here every day, on one or another of his lights, defending his food source against any and all other hummers who come by looking for a meal. The lights are the perfect size for his tiny feet. Milwaukie, Oregon, January 2017.
