This stretch of Koekohe Beach with these concretions is well visited by tourists. The boulders are concretions of mud, silt and sane bound together by calcite. Maori lore has these boulders as old eel baskets, washed ashore from a mighty sailing waka around the time of their settlement here in New Zealand. The boulders tend to average between 0.5 and 1.5 metres in diameter.
